practitioner spotlight: dr. nancy talley, l.ac.

At Vital Qi, we’re proud to work alongside a team of practitioners who bring not only skill but rich personal depth to their care. Dr. Nancy Talley is no exception. With a background in energy work, Thai massage, and a deep respect for traditional medicine, Nancy’s journey into acupuncture has been anything but linear—and that’s exactly what makes her perspective so grounded and unique.

What inspired you to become an acupuncturist?
Before becoming an acupuncturist, I worked as an energy healer, primarily in Reiki and Thai massage. Acupuncture felt like a natural progression of my life’s work—a way to build on the energetic foundation I had already been working with, while offering something more physically rooted and medically expansive. At the time, I had no idea what I was really signing up for, but I was pleasantly surprised. What drew me in and kept me inspired was the idea of using ancient healing systems to support people in avoiding more invasive procedures and medications, especially when treating mental health challenges.

What do you love most about working at Vital Qi?
It’s tough to narrow it down to just one thing. I really appreciate the wide range of cases I get to treat and the incredibly diverse demographic of Richmond. That variety keeps the work dynamic and fulfilling. It’s also a meaningful contrast to my previous work in the beauty and wellness industry up north—I get to bring both sides of my experience to the table here.

How do you like to unwind or recharge outside of the clinic?
I’m an avid motorcyclist, which might surprise people. Riding really helps me stay present—you can’t afford to be distracted when you’re on two wheels. That kind of focus is meditative in its own way, and honestly, it helps keep my ADHD in check. It’s a true form of mental reset.

Do you have a favorite food spot in Richmond?
I actually live outside of the area, so when I’m in Richmond, any good meal feels like a special occasion. I love exploring what the city has to offer whenever I’m here.

What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
I’ve had a deep love for all things Gothic since I was in middle school—and I’m in my mid-50s now. It’s a part of who I am that’s stayed with me through all phases of life.
